How to remember the 6 times table

  • Take 5 times and add one more: 6 × 7 = 35 + 7 = 42.
  • With an even number, the answer ends in that number and its tens digit is half of it: 6 × 4 = 24 and 6 × 8 = 48.
  • It’s double the 3 times table: 3 × 9 = 27, so 6 × 9 = 54.

Patterns in the 6 times table

  • Each answer is 6 more than the one before: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and so on.
  • The last digits repeat every 5 answers: 6, 2, 8, 4, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because an even number times anything is even.
  • Keep adding the digits of any answer and you always reach 3, 6 or 9.
  • 6 × 6 = 36 is a square number: 6 rows of 6.
  • Learning in order? You already know 6 × 1 to 6 × 5 from the earlier tables (6 × 3 = 3 × 6), so only 7 of the facts up to 6 × 12 are new.
