How to remember the 3 times table

  • Double the number and add it once more: 3 × 7 = 14 + 7 = 21.
  • Keep adding the digits of any answer and you land on 3, 6 or 9: 27 gives 2 + 7 = 9.
  • Answers take turns being odd and even: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18.

Patterns in the 3 times table

  • Each answer is 3 more than the one before: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and so on.
  • The last digits run 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0, using every digit once before repeating.
  • 3 × 3 = 9 is a square number: 3 rows of 3.
  • Learning in order? You already know 3 × 1 to 3 × 2 from the earlier tables (3 × 3 = 3 × 3), so only 10 of the facts up to 3 × 12 are new.
