How to remember the 5 times table

  • Answers end in 5 or 0, taking turns: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.
  • Work out 10 times, then halve it: 5 × 8 is half of 80, which is 40.
  • Use a clock face: the minute hand on the 7 means 35 minutes, and 5 × 7 = 35.

Patterns in the 5 times table

  • Each answer is 5 more than the one before: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and so on.
  • The last digits repeat every 2 answers: 5, 0.
  • Answers take turns being odd and even: odd × odd is odd, odd × even is even.
  • 5 × 5 = 25 is a square number: 5 rows of 5.
  • Learning in order? You already know 5 × 1 to 5 × 4 from the earlier tables (5 × 3 = 3 × 5), so only 8 of the facts up to 5 × 12 are new.
